WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Darline Graham (R-South Carolina) today announced her support for the Protecting American Taxpayers Act. In light of recent reports detailing widespread fraud across government assistance programs in places like Minnesota and California, this legislation saves taxpayers billions of dollars and implements several measures to prevent similar abuses from reoccurring in the future.
“The American people work hard for their money, and they expect their tax dollars to go toward worthy causes – not criminals. In recent months, there’s been growing alarm regarding the billions of dollars in fraudulent activity uncovered around the country,” said Senator Darline Graham. “Fraudsters who steal public funds must be held accountable. It’s time to take action to prevent these criminals from getting their hands on your money in the first place.”
The Protecting American Taxpayers Act:
- Saves taxpayers an estimated $240 billion
- Establishes an official task force to combat deep fake scams
- Claws back unspent COVID funds and extends the statute of limitations on COVID fraud crimes
- Bars individuals convicted of defrauding the Small Business Administration from receiving future assistance
- Rewards government employees who uncover fraudulent activity in government agencies
- Prohibits government funds from falling into the hands of hostile nations or terrorist organizations
